There is a lot of confusion and misrepresentation about non-surgical hair replacement and hair loss treatments but the main question asked is what exactly are the different methods and treatments for hair loss in males and females.
HAIR LOSS – SURGICAL TRANSPLANTS
Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that involves the movement of skin containing hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) to the bald or balding parts of the body (the recipient site). It is mainly used to treat male pattern baldness in which grafts having hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted in the bald scalp. Moreover, it is also used to bring back eyebrows, eyelashes and beard hair, and to fill in marks and scars caused in accidents and surgeries like face-lifts and previous hair transplants. Hair transplantation differs from skin grafting because rather than a single strip of skin, grafts of nearly all the epidermis and dermis neighboring the hair follicle, and several tiny grafts are transplanted.
Since hair naturally grows in follicles that contain groupings of 1 to 4 hairs, today’s most highly developed methods transplant this naturally occurring 1–4 hair “follicular units” in their natural groupings. Due to this reason, contemporary hair transplantation can attain a natural manifestation by mimicking natural hair for hair. This recent hair transplant process is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Donor hair can be harvested in two very different ways;
1. Strip Harvesting – Under local ansestheisa, a strip of scalp is removed. The wound is then sutured back together and this piece of scalp tissue is cut in to small pieces of tissue called grafts which are then transplanted back in to the part of the patients head in which there is thinning. This technique leaves a linear scar in the donor area, which normally gets sheltered by the patient’s hair (if long). The removal of stitches is done by a trained medic and the recovery time is about 2 weeks.
2. FUE Harvesting – (Follicular Unit Extraction) Under local anesthesia, individual follicles of hair are removed. This uses tiny punches of 0.6mm to 1.25mm in diameter. Using a micro blade, every follicle is then put back in the thinning area of the scalp. There are no noticeable scars or after surgery pain, with no need to return to the clinic after the surgery as there are no stitches to remove. This is because these are single follicles and no large amount of tissue is removed. Recovery from FUE is within 7 days.
